Sustainable Living: Rain Catcher

It rained yesterday. Hurray! I never thought I’d feel that way until this summer when I lost the battle to keep my lawn green.
As the thunder rolled in we displaced everything in our recycling bin (luckily only 2 days worth of stuff) so we could use our recycling tote to catch the rain water. My husband strategically positioned it under our gutter where happens to drip excessively.
Look around to see where you may have a serendipitous drip spot, or it helps to catch rain off a slanted garage roof.

When it was all said and done, we captured 4″ of rain water in the bottom of our tote.

Now we need to find a permanent receptacle for catching the rain – like an old garbage can with a lid. It’s nice to have the lid so you don’t loose your collected rain water to evaporation.

Do you have a rain catcher? I’d love to hear what you use!
