Reduce Food Waste

Happy Earth Week, Reduction Rebels!

I’m proud to participate in NBCU’s Green is Universal campaign, #NoFoodWaste

Last year around this time I headed a Garbage Reduction Challenge at my son’s schools where we challenged the students to reduce food waste. The week before the challenge we weighed the lunchtime garbage. Then the week of Earth Day we weighed the garbage each day to see if it was less. Soup day was a wreck, but the other days the students reduced their garbage considerably!

The average person wastes 244 pounds of food each year—roughly the same weight as a refrigerator! #NoFoodWasted

This year for Earth Week I’m going to give a daily challenge to help reduce the staggering statistics of food waste in the US.

7 Ways to Reduce Food Waste

Monday: Make a meal using leftovers from the weekend. This could save you up to $175 per month!

Tuesday: Do a food inventory check and plan upcoming meals according to expiration dates.

Wednesday: Try composting. True stat –  14% of all the trash produced in America consists of food scraps!

Thursday: Portion control your dinner serving and allocate the rest for tomorrow’s lunch.

Friday: Repurpose stale bread for French toast, bread pudding, croutons, fondue, meatballs or French onion soup.

Saturday: Getting ready to do the weekly shopping? Eat before you go. Food shopping on a full stomach can help you avoid impulse purchases, which often result in food waste.

Sunday: Freeze your veggie scraps to use to make soup stock when you’ve collected enough.
