Over the course of last weekend I consumed 2 brownies, a cupcake and apple crisp a la mode. The consequence of sugar overload led to a sabotaged immune system and a very sick ME. In the same span of time my husband has been trying out the paleo diet. He has lost weight, isn’t sick and feeling great. Damn him (just kidding)!
Rethinking the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Party
This polar diet and polar results of the two of us brought us to discuss our game plan for Halloween this year. My boys and I have been thoroughly enjoying the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It’s jumped to one of my favorite kids books of all time. Our plan was to invite my mother and her chocolate fountain over on Halloween for an all out chocolate party.
I envisioned trays of chocolate bars and flavored marshmallows. A crock pot of hot chocolate. Skewers of goodies ready to be showered in the chocolate fountain.
Scratch all of that. Who wants to be exhausted, sick and fat for the month of November?
Trick or Treating is Great Exercise
There are some traditions I cannot deny my children, and trick or treating is one of them. The expectation, planning and friendship is a huge part of childhood. Costumes, pictures, running from house to house is healthy and exciting. I’m not going to take that away.
But will I be the evil Halloween Grinch who takes away all their candy? Will I be a Jimmy Fallon video that isn’t a joke? I’m afraid so. But trust me, the sugar is scarier than the loss of it.
Donating Halloween Candy
Now you know how much I hate waste, right? I couldn’t possibly tease my boys with a bag full of chocolate and have them witness the horror of me throwing it in the garbage. That’s stupid. That’s why I want to point out some REWARDING alternatives to eating halloween candy.

Healthy Alternative Paleo Dessert Recipes
So after we run around the neighborhood collecting candy for our troops, we are still going to have our Willy Wonka party – with a Paleo twist. Let me first say that when I first heard of the Paleo diet, I thought it was a raw food diet. There is nothing I like more than soft, hot food. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s all about cooking and recipes and ingredients I love like pumpkin, coconut and cauliflower.
That said, here are some yummy recipes that I’ll be making for Halloween!
