Who’s excited about the winter Olympics? Whether or not you like skiing and hockey or not, the Olympics are truly magical. 89 countries have come together in Russia to strut their talents. This is a huge culmination of training and skill that the world shares in together. When you think of what we have in common with Togo (it’s in Africa), we can say, Alpine Skiing. Who knew?
To celebrate the excitement, enormity and significance of the Olympics, I’ve created a DIY reusable pennant banner. This is a great kid’s craft because it’s an opportunity to learn about different countries; study their flag; learn about different sports; and you can even toss some stats in there – like what country has won the most winter Olympic metals? (Answer at the end of the post…hint it’s not the USA.)
How to Make a Reusable Pennant Banner
Cloth, mini pennants – I’m using pennants from Oriental Trading (12 for $6), but you can easily make these from upcycled clothing, like pants material
String, Rope or Paracord
Note: Before you start you may want to reinforce the string holes in pennants by sewing around the holes. This will help them hold up well to repeat use.
Tip: I was able to hold my pennant up to may computer screen and trace the flag image directly onto the fabric. This saves time, paper and ink.
Step 2: Color in the drawing with washable markers.
Step 3: String the pennants onto a string and hang.
Step 4. When you’re done with the pennant banner, soak them in soapy, warm water for 20 – 30 minutes. At this point the pennants will look very faded. You’ll need to then machine wash on hot.
Tip: Add baking soda to your wash load for a better clean. Line dry for natural sun bleaching and fabric stiffening!
Step 5: Reuse and redecorate for your next celebration!
Winter Olympic Factoids
BUT…that could be argued because Germany collectively ( Germany + Unified team of Germany + East Germany + West Germany) has won 358 in total.
The USA has won 253.
