Remember the famous words of wisdom: “It’s not what you do or say, but how you make people feel.” I honestly remind myself of that all the time. This Holiday season I’m now applying that thought to the gift giving process. With each thing I add to my giving list I ask, “How will this make so-and-so feel?” And I’m looking for all kinds of positive answers like “a king” or like “everything they did for me this year was greatly appreciated.” What I’m not looking for “overwhelmed” or “underwhelmed.” If I’m giving a gift I want to hit a home run.
Minimalism Gift Giving
The UK has done some interesting studies on over-consumption, leading to stats like 4 out of 5 people receive gifts they don’t want. Three percent of those ungrateful recipients throw their unwanted gifts directly into the trash. Is that depressing or what?
The upside to those stats is that consumers are opting for more minimalistic gift giving. This means giving less junk and giving instead something that’s truly special.
A minimalist gift is a perfect something that is so extraordinary that someone wouldn’t buy for themselves yet, practical enough to be used every day. For instance, giving the gift of many little experiences; like when you snuggle into a blanket that feels like nothing you’ve ever felt before and puts you into a state of utter relaxation.
It’s not a novelty gift that gets a laugh, or a generic gift that becomes instant clutter. Most importantly a minimalist gift is something that is sustainable. It lasts because it’s made of the highest quality and cared for by a person who really appreciates it.
