5 Clever Ways to Reuse and Repurpose Address Books

I get it, we’re going digital. The paper trail is dead. But what about that old address book you still have laying around? Is it your backup in case your iphone falls in a toilet or are you ready to feng shui that old address book into the recycling bin?

If that’s the case, here are 5 practical ideas for repurposing your old address book:

1. A children’s personal dictionary

If you have school age kids, they probably come to you once a day and ask how to spell something. Then a week later they ask you how to spell that word again. Salvage your obsolete address book to reuse as a dictionary for all those tough words that they get stuck on. You’ll thank yourself in the long run!

2. Keeper of Passwords: You probably find yourself signing up for websites, newsletters (ahem, the Eve of Reduction newsletter) and online accounts. With this comes a slew of passwords and usernames to keep track of. If you keep a small address book by your computer, jot down your login info, alphabetized by business or web address. I recommend marking them down in short hand for security reasons. This is a great ay to reuse something you already have to simplify and organize your life.

3. Secret storage: The fun thing about books is that they can be hallowed out for really mysterious, top secret hiding spaces. So if you’re not using your address book for its original purpose, why not upcycle it into something useful. A few years ago I hallowed out an old book and made it into a tea box.

4. Address Labels:

Instead of tossing your antiquated address book, hack it up and use your entries as address labels. With a little double-sided tape or a glue stick, you can reuse your address book to quickly and simply send out your holiday cards or thank you cards. You might even want to take a photo copy or two so you can have your friends and family’s addresses on hand for future use.

5. Recipe holder: Are your favorite recipes in need of some organization? Simply paste them in to your address book and you’ll have them alphabetized and in one convenient location in no time!
This works for other collections you may have like stamps or favorite quotes, too.
